The Ugandan telecom industry continues to be leading the country’s economic development through making communication easy and affordable. Still, it is looking to improve its electronic waste management.

According to industry experts, the industry must operate in a more responsible manner through the minimization of a number of negative impacts on the environment it may be having.

“We are looking at all the options on the table to better supply Ugandans and the environment with the technological and mobile needs for the future and waste management is high on the list,” said one Ugandan government official working closely with companies on the ground.

In this regard, telecom companies in Uganda have an obligation to make sure that the end-of-life of electronics, especially mobile phones and computers, are taken care of. The main generation of e-waste predominantly comes from obsolete computers and associated information technology and the provision of cellular phones in Uganda. The number of consumers in Uganda who value environmental and sustainability efforts is growing.
