Nigeria re-appoints Ilukwe as Galaxy Backbone CEO

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has reappointed pioneer Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone, Gerald Ilukwe, to another term of three years.

Galaxy Backbone is a government-owned technology services provider to Federal Government and its ministries, agencies and extra-ministerial bodies.


Government said the re-appointment of Ilukwe is in recognition of his diligence and the confidence reposed in him the President.

Secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), Alhaji Yayale Ahmed in the letter in possession of our reporter conveying the reappointment, congratulated Ilukwe and enjoined him to take the ICT Company to greater heights.

Prior to his appointment, Ilukwe led the consolidation of Microsoft’s business in Nigeria as pioneer Country Manager for Nigeria before quitting the local subsidiary of the US technology company in 2006.

As Federal Government-owned company established in 2006, Galaxy Backbone’s primary mandate is to provide Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure and services to MDAs of the Government as well as the digital inclusion of underserved communities and locations in Nigeria.

The technology company was established to drive the transformation of the public sector through the deployment and utilization of ICT resources infrastructure.

In its three years of operation, Galaxy Backbone has deployed a nationwide network, delivering greatly enhanced data, internet, voice and video services to over 250 MDAs on its extensive fibre,
radio and VSAT domestic networks.

The company also boasts over 2,500 remote sites across the country and is presently rolling out a metro-wide fibre optic network within the FCT, Abuja.

Ilukwe is an Electronic Engineering graduate from University of Nigeria, Nsukka and holds an Executive MBA from ESUT Business School, Lagos. Over the past 20 years, Ilukwe has acquired extensive experience working for a string of well-known IT companies.

Prior to joining Galaxy, he was the pioneer General Manager of Microsoft Nigeria, the Nigerian subsidiary of the US based software giant.
