MOROCCO’S telecommunications sector continues to grow.
According to Maroc Telecom, the industry is continuing to improve as they expected, with greater Internet penetration and use of ICT for everyday needs.
The company reported that in the first quarter of this year, it earned $858 million, (about R6 billion) a 4.3 percent increase compared to the same period the year before.
Their customer base increased by 14 percent to 22.4 million, including users in Morocco, Mauritania (Mauritel), Burkina Faso (Onatel), Gabon (Gabon Telecom), Mali (Sotelma) and Belgium (Mobisud Belgium).
Maroc Telecom is the leading telecom company in North Africa.
An official from the company said that they expected revenue and customers to continue to grow due to the improvement in infrastructure in the country.
“We believe that as we move forward this year and beyond, the Moroccan government will give a boost to the telecom sector through its infrastructure projects,” said the official.
Rabat has launched a number of initiatives that seek to improve on the country’s roadways, housing and telecom infrastructure. This, said the official, would be a major catalyst in the company being able to “penetrate areas of the country that had been difficult to get to”
