Besides being Africa’s first global sponsor of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, MTN continues to bring its involvement in sporting competitions. The 2010 Africa Open golf tournament, scheduled to take place at the East London Golf Club from 7 to 10 January, is the operator’s latest move.
MTN is keen on showcasing best local talent and increase awareness on the African continent through its support and commitment to major sport events.
“This year, MTN South Africa saw the importance of supporting this tournament because it not only places the African continent on the global map, but it is a significant development area as it touches the lives of the communities we connect,” says Veli Mabena, general manager for marketing and brand communication at MTN South Africa.
Mabena added that the sponsorship “will help increase awareness around the tournament and showcase some of the best local golfing talent to the world”. The four-day Africa Open tournament will be televised live on both local and international television stations and its total prize is pegged at one million Euros.
Launched in 1994, the MTN Group is a multinational telecommunications group, operating in 21 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
