MTN supports educational initiative for teachers

MTN South Africa will supply approximately 360.000 teachers in South Africa with laptops as part of Teacher Laptop Initiative (TLI) campaign, that strives to improve the overall quality of education in public school across the country.

The initiative, announced on Friday by the Department of Basic Education (DoBE) in Pretoria and managed by the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) and various stakeholders, aims to give teachers the necessary resources to conduct their lessons in the classrooms nationwide.

“MTN Business is providing the connectivity bridge that will enable teachers to fully participate in the information economy. This ranges from Web hosted services to, even more critically, the ability to enhance the learning experience through Web-based research” explained Nkululeko Magadla, the head of business channels at MTN South Africa.

The packages include laptop, data card and network connectivity. An additional TopUp options will be available for managing connectivity costs and avoid unpleasant surprises, said the MTN representative.
Additionally, MTN Business is leveraging the experience of providing connectivity to rural areas of the MTN SA Foundation in this TLI project.

Launched in 1994, the MTN Group is a multinational telecommunications group, operating in 21 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, with 103,2 million subscribers registered at the end of June 2009.
