De Lille takes on mobile operators

Johannesburg, (IT News Africa)—Opposition party leader, Patricia De Lille, has lodged a complaint with the Competition Commission over what she believes is the high costs of mobile phone calls in South Africa.

She called on it to investigate whether the operators, particularly the dominant players, are acting anti-competitively or are guilty of any prohibited practices.

‘In my letter I have shown why we as South Africans should be suspicious of the exorbitant costs of the cell phone calls we make,” De Lille said.

De Lille said her party, the Independent Democrats was worried about the effects the exorbitant costs have on the poor and on the cost of doing business in our country.

“I believe that South Africans have long suffered poor competition and exorbitant telecommunications costs unnecessarily and that it is vitally important that this be investigated by the Competition Commission urgently. Our economy and all South Africans, but especially the poor, are affected by this,” her letter states.
