Unions again call for SABC board’s resignation

Labour unions in the communication sector in South Africa have again called on the board of the country’s public broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), to resign.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has repeatedly made the call in recent months, but renewed the statement following the resignation of board member Fadilah Lagadien on Monday.

Says CWU general secretary Gallant Roberts: “Communication Workers Union welcomes the bold step taken by Fadilah Lagadien to voluntarily resign from her position as a board member of the SABC. Our delight is particularly because she has heeded a call made by CWU in a meeting held with all SABC Board of Directors almost a year ago, wherein we presented our dissatisfaction and called upon all of Board members to voluntarily resign. Fadilah also raises the inability of the Board members to manage the public broadcaster effectively,”

“We therefore again call on the remaining Board members to shelf their pride and recognize that the SABC needs a complete new leadership in order to save the already dented image of the public broadcaster.”
