MTN rewards customers with free airtime

MTNhires_logo.gifA 20% free airtime promotion by MTN to reward millions of loyal customers for their continued support was launched last week in South Africa.

All MTN customers who recharged their cell phone accounts with any MTN airtime denomination during the month of March, were eligible to receive 20% of that airtime back for free to be used for calls to MTN numbers. Airtime was loaded onto the respective cell phone accounts on Thursday and Friday last week.

The MTN network recorded a huge increase in voice calls and data traffic from Friday and into the weekend due to the promotion, similar to the levels experienced during the high-season Christmas period.

Unfortunately, a network component failure in Johannesburg created a loop in the MTN network causing disruptions across the country. This component was rectified on Sunday with the support of Ericsson, ensuring that the MTN network was up and running to its full capacity once again. MTN and Ericsson are currently doing an audit to investigate the root cause that resulted in the component failure.

The company would like to reassure its customers that it is working around the clock to maintain a quality and reliable service on its network. MTN has apologised to its customers for the inconvenience caused during the weekend.
