Trade unions again call for SABC board to resign

Trade unions in the telecommunications sector in South Africa have once again called for the resignation of the entire South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board.

This follows the resignation of Christine Qunta, deputy chairperson of the SABC board, this week.

Says Gallant Roberts Communication Workers Union (CWU) spokesperson: “Communication Workers Union welcomes the resignation of the deputy chairperson of the SABC board as this is in line with our call made last year that the SABC board be disbanded or members of the board should resign willingly since the board was not properly constituted,”

“We encourage other board members to also resign as this will pave the way for the appointment of a new board which should be done after the National elections (as the ANC has already called) in line with the process enunciated by the Broadcasting Amendment Act.”

He also said the instability at the broadcasting corporation reinforced CWU’s call for a forensic audit of the corporation as a whole. Communications Minister Dr. Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has recently received three independent reports on corporate governance within the state broadcaster.
