Nokia introduces new development platform

Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer, has released its new application development framework. The framework, called Qt 4.5, presents great opportunity for the open source development community with licensing options allowing for the development of proprietary applications on the platform.

The Lesser General Public License (LGPL) licensing option gives open source developers the option of developing these applications on the Qt platform without paying a license fee. Commercial license options are still available for developers not creating open source applications.

Says Benoit Schillings, Chief Technologist at Nokia Qt Software: “Qt 4.5 is setting the benchmark for application development. With the performance improvements in Qt, the introduction of Qt Creator, and the release of the Qt SDK, developers looking for a native or a hybrid native/web application framework now have the power and flexibility they need.”

Additionally, Nokia Qt Software will make available source code repositories online to the wider developer community, with commitment of greater levels of support, even under the LGPL license option.

Nokia believes that the new release of the QT framework will enable both increased performance of applications and greater productivity for developers using the new platform.
