Hoax e-mailers target MTN

Must Read

MTNhires_logo.gifMTN has once again become the victim to hoax e-mailers, falsely claiming that the mobile operator is giving away free handsets to customers. MTN distanced itself from the hoax e-mail campaign, warning its customers to be wary of the false claims.

In a statement, the company said: “MTN is aware of a fraudulent email being circulated via the internet which announces that MTN is giving away free handsets. This email is a hoax and has not been authorised by MTN South Africa.”

A previous internet hoax targeting the company, headquartered in South Africa, claimed that the mobile operator was giving away cars to customers in the run-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. MTN recently launched its “We can’t wait, let’s go 2010!” World Cup campaign as Africa’s only Global sponsor of the event.

MTN further said that all official promotional offers are checked and audited, and opologised for any confusion arising from the fraudulent e-mail claims.
