Mozilla’s Firefox browser has been translated into Lauganda after a two day marathon. This software is aimed at non-English speaking people as a browsing tool.
Experts from Translate.org.za trained 300 students from CIT and Luganda linguists from the Institute of Languages at Makerere. A CD with the translated version will be distributed by CIT for a fee that will only cover administrative costs. An electronic version will be on CIT web site for interested users to download.
“There is now a Firefox browser that is 80 percent Luganda but the local community with help from CIT needs to continue to work on it to do some improvements before it is disseminated,” said Friedel Wolff from Translate.org.za.
Academics from the Africa community have stressed how important it is to support local content and languages online to reach the rural population.
A lecturer from the department of ICT at Rhodes University, Lorenzo Dalvit, said it was a great experience but it was also a lot of work.
