Egypt mobile subscribers predicted to reach 57 mil

According to predictions by research and Markets, there will be an estimated 73 mobile phone subscribers per 100 people by 2010, the total number of subscribers reaching 57.3 million.

These figures are an extension of the upward trend of mobile usage during recent years, during which the reputation of mobile phones surpassed fixed-line subscriptions.

Vice president of Vodafone Egypt, Hany Mahoud accredited this growth to a number of factors; Affordability plays a big role, as more people are able to afford mobile phones and subscriptions.

Vodafone, the second largest mobile telecommunication company in Egypt, plans on expanding beyond its current role to become a “total’ telecommunication company; by offering numerous services through like expanding its 3G coverage and improving its customer care. Vodafone hopes to have 20 million customers by the year 2010, said Mohmoud.

Newcomer Etisalat is predicted to hold a market share of 15.8percent in 2010. It is said that Etisalat will continue to expand its coverage to reach more consumers.

A recent company statement from Etisalat said they are a reliable network, which is user-friendly and transparent. They believe that is why customers are attracted to their service.

Mahmoud said Egypt’s large youth population is helping to contribute to the fast market growth. He does however believe that the mobile companies will inevitably reach equilibrium.
“We’re still a very growing market compared to a more mature market like Europe. There is a very optimistic hope that the mobile industry will continue to grow. But in three to five years it will reach stability,” Mahmoud said.
