France Telecom (FT) was looking into a potential acquisition in Ghana following its decision to walk away from a possible takeover of Scandinavian telecoms group TeliaSonera, says Thomson Financial citing a report in La Tribune newspaper. FT’s finance director Gervais Pellissier is quoted as saying that he had an eye on acquiring a stake in Ghana Telecom. However, the French group have already been beaten to the punch, with Vodafone Group’s USD900 million purchase of a 70% stake in the Ghanaian national PTO.
France Telecom is also keen on taking part in the privatisation of Algerie Telecom, although the process has been delayed due to changes in government and may now begin at the start of 2009.
France Telecom’s CFO Gervais Pellissier said “We will stay in attentive observation of the situation, and if other opportunities come up, we’ll definitely study them.” Pellissier however confirmed, FT expected a “major acquisition” in the next two years.
