Renew Driving Licence in South Africa: Validity and Changes

South Africaโ€™s driving licence system is in the middle of its biggest policy shift in years. The current card has been issued on a five-year cycle since 1998. Cabinet approved extending South Africa’s driver’s license validity from five to ten years in July 2026. The law has not yet changed. You must continue to renew your driving licence every five years until the legislative amendments are gazetted.

Cabinet Approves 10-Year Driving Licence in South Africa

Cabinetโ€™s meeting on 29 July 2026 produced one of the most significant South Africa driving licence changes in decades. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni confirmed that the extension applies to Codes A, A1, B and EB. These codes cover motorcycles and all light motor vehicles.

Licence CodeVehicle TypeCurrent ValidityApproved New Period
A, A1Motorcycles5 years10 years (not yet law)
B, EBLight motor vehicles5 years10 years (not yet law)
Heavy commercial and public transportTrucks, buses2 or 5 yearsNo change
Professional Driving Permit (PrDP)PrDP holders2 yearsNo change

The 10-year period exceeds the eight-year validity the Department of Transport had previously proposed. The South Africa driving licence extension addresses years of lobbying by motorist groups and civil society. The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) researched validity periods across 35 countries and found an average of 8.5 years. OUTA described the Cabinet decision as โ€œlong overdue.โ€ OUTA CEO Wayne Duvenage said the new validity period could take effect within months, depending on the Presidencyโ€™s plans.

Ntshavheni was explicit: motorists must continue renewing expired cards until the amended law takes effect.

Renew Driving Licence in South Africa Before the Law Changes

The driving licence renewal process has not changed. A drivers licence renewal does not require a new driving test. Renew your card at least four weeks before the expiry date. Renewing after the expiry date means you must apply for a temporary driving licence. A temporary licence costs extra and must be carried while you wait for your new card. If your card has expired, carry proof of application while you wait.

What do I need to renew my drivers licence? The South African Government outlines what to bring to your nearest Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC):

  • South African identity document (and a copy):
Your original ID, your old driving licence card or a valid South African passport.
  • Four black-and-white photographs:
Confirm the exact number required with your DLTC before having photographs taken.
  • Proof of residential address:
A utility account in your name. If the bill is not in your name, the account holder must make an affidavit confirming your address.
  • Application fee:
How much to renew driving licence varies by province and DLTC. Online bookings through the NaTIS system carry a card fee of approximately R250, according to FundiConnect.

At the DLTC, your fingerprints will be taken and you will undergo an eye test. Fingerprint biometrics are a standard part of the renewal process. You may instead have a registered optometrist test your eyes beforehand and submit the report. Your new driving licence card is normally ready within four to six weeks.

Driving Licence Booking Online and the DL1 Form

All South African residents can renew driving licence online through the NaTIS portal. Visit online.natis.gov.za to book your appointment. Drivers licence renewal online booking is mandatory for Gauteng residents and available in selected areas of the Eastern Cape.

To complete your driving licence booking and application:

  1. Visit online.natis.gov.za and select your province.
  2. Choose a DLTC, date and available time slot.
  3. Download the drivers licence renewal form (DL1 application for renewal of driving licence card) before your appointment. Collect the form at the DLTC if you prefer.
  4. Complete the NCP form if your address or personal details have changed.
  5. Bring all documents, photographs and payment on the day.

Completing drivers licence booking online confirms your appointment and displays the applicable fee before your visit. After your visit, track your card status online or opt in for SMS updates. DLTC staff can assist if any section of the form is unclear. The NaTIS system is part of South Africaโ€™s broader push to digitise traffic and licencing services across more provinces.

South Africa Driving Licence Scanning and the New Card Delays

The driving licence card currently in use dates to 1998. South Africa driving licence scanning at roadblocks relies on visual inspection and barcode readers. The planned new driving licence card would change this. The new card would carry chip-based data readable by electronic scanners. Advanced security features would align the card with the ISO 18013 international standard for driving licences. The new card would also make South African driving licences more easily recognised for use abroad.

South Africaโ€™s card printing machine is 26 years old and has experienced more than 159 breakdowns. A new machine was planned to produce the upgraded card. The Auditor-General of South Africa found the original tender for new machines to be irregular. The process was set aside and a fresh tender opened in February 2026, with applications closing in March.

By August 2026, OUTA was raising concerns that the new tender had also stalled. Duvenage warned that the South Africa driving licence changes tied to the new card faced further delay. OUTA also warned that the 10-year validity extension may only take effect alongside the new card rollout. That link could push the change back further than motorists expect.

The Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA) targets 25% implementation of the new card by 2026/27. The target rises to 75% by 2027/28. The Department of Transport has established the Government Printing Works as a backup production facility. South Africaโ€™s Smart ID card already uses similar chip-based technology. A driving licence card at the same standard would let scanners verify the holderโ€™s data directly from the chip.

Conclusion: Renew Now and Watch for Driving Licence Changes

Cabinetโ€™s decision on a 10-year driving licence is confirmed but not yet law. Renew your card before it expires and carry proof of application while you wait. The new card system would improve South Africa driving licence scanning and reduce fraud. Procurement remains unresolved. Watch the Government Gazette for the date the 10-year validity officially takes effect.
