AI That Browses for You? Google Just Made It Real

Google has introduced Gemini 2.5 Computer Use, a new capability that lets its AI model control web browsers directly—performing actions like clicking, typing, scrolling, and navigating webpages just like a human user.

The feature allows developers to integrate Gemini as a hands-on digital agent that can automate web tasks, interact with UI-only systems, or execute research workflows that require browsing. It works through a “computer_use” API that issues specific UI actions, which are then carried out in a browser environment such as Chrome or through automation tools like Playwright.

Gemini 2.5 Computer Use could automate form-filling, website testing, or dashboard navigation—ideal for enterprises with legacy systems or limited APIs. It also advances Google’s push toward agentic AI, where intelligent systems can reason, plan, and act autonomously across digital environments.

Google has assured that robust safety measures are in place, requiring confirmation for sensitive tasks like payments or logins and blocking certain domains. However, experts highlight potential concerns around privacy, reliability, and misuse if these agents aren’t adequately monitored.

The Bigger Picture

The feature aligns with Google’s vision of embedding Gemini deeper into Chrome, Search, and Workspace. It complements new “Deep Research” and “AI Mode” tools that already use Gemini 2.5 for autonomous browsing and data synthesis.

For now, Gemini 2.5 Computer Use is available in preview via Google AI Studio and Vertex AI. Its success could mark the beginning of everyday web automation powered not by code but by conversation.
