Rand Water Begins Infrastructure Maintenance Tomorrow

Rand Water implements Proactive Extensive Maintenance to improve reliability and Efficiency of Its Water Infrastructure.

Rand Water, the largest bulk water utility in Africa and one of the largest in the world, providing bulk potable water to more than 11 million people in Gauteng, parts of Mpumalanga, the Free State and North West – an area that stretches over 18 000 km2 will be embarking on an extensive proactive maintenance of its infrastructure from 22 June to 29 July 2024.

Tech and Infrastructure

The organization currently undertaking the Drone Technology project for data collection, leakages and thermal sensing purposes considers it a top priority to sustain and maintain its infrastructure.

According to Rand Water, proactive infrastructure maintenance is important to preserve the quality and integrity of their infrastructure and extend the life span of their assets. Rand Water has four main booster stations: Eikenhof, Palmiet, Mapleton, and Zwartkopjes Systems.

This winter maintenance project is scheduled to focus on the four systems and will affect different municipalities on different days and times. The Zwartkopjes and Daleside Pump Stations will only experience a single instance of limited service. It is important to reiterate that the maintenance project will be implemented on different dates in different municipalities.

The implementation of the project will kick-start on 22 June 2024 and will commence in Mogale City Local Municipality. Normal pumping will not be affected at this stage as only one meter will be impacted.

Eikenhof System

On 24 June, pumping at the Eikenhof Pumping Station will be reduced to 50% for eight hours and later increased to 67% for the next 64 hours. For the remainder of the project, Eikenhof will operate at 83% capacity for a period of over two weeks.

Zwartkopjes System

On 24 June 2024, pumping at Zwartkopjes Pumping Station will be reduced to 50% for 27 hours. There will be no pumping at Daleside for four (4) hours.

Palmiet System

• Pumping at the Palmiet System will not be affected during the implementation of the project on 28
June in Ekurhuleni.
• On 1 July 2024, the station will be operating at 60% for eight hours.
• On 15 July 2024, Palmiet will be pumping at 68% for 50 hours.
• On 29 July 2024, the system will be pumping at 76% for 40 hours.

Mapleton System

• Maintenance work at the Mapleton System will commence on 5 July 2024, and pumping will be reduced to 73% for 24 hours. There will be no pumping at Bloemendal for 40 hours.
• On 19 July, pumping will not be affected. Only two meters in the City of Ekurhuleni and three meters in City of Tshwane will be affected for 39 hours.
• On 26 July 2024, there will be no pumping for 77 hours.

Rand Water has requested the affected municipalities to advise their customers on the extent and the impact of water supply in their respective areas. Rand Water will provide updates throughout the maintenance period.
