NTT DATA Middle East and Africa, a digital business and IT services entity, has recently received a Gold Medal Sustainability Rating from EcoVadis, one of the world’s largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings.

Set emissions goals

In 2021, NTT DATA launched a sustainability initiative aimed at using technology to foster a better, more interconnected future for all. It set ambitious goals to achieve net-zero emissions in its data centers by 2030, in its offices and facilities by 2035, and across its entire value chain by 2040.

This recognition highlights NTT DATA’s commitment to sustainability, placing it among the top 5% of sustainable companies globally, as acknowledged by EcoVadis.

Accountable for its operations

MEA Executive for Sustainability, Sherrard Govender, says, “We are proud to have received such an important accolade from an industry body that provides a sustainability scorecard for more than 130,000 companies from over 220 industries and over 180 countries and regions globally. We have set incredibly ambitious sustainability targets that we hold ourselves accountable to across all our operations. Receiving this type of global recognition reaffirms our commitment to these goals and makes us more resolute than ever to continue driving positive change to mitigate our environmental impact.”

NTT DATA’s approach to sustainability is guided by the UN- United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Achieving these targets requires long-term planning and investment, adds Govender, “We’re diligently working towards our NET ZERO Vision 2040 and supporting clients to accelerate their own journey to net zero. This means a significant financial investment. For example, we’re using innovative Direct Chip Liquid Cooling and Liquid Immersion Cooling technologies to make our data centers more sustainable as the need for computing power increases with the introduction of Generative AI.”

NTT DATA has established specific sustainability targets aimed at enhancing livelihoods and promoting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive society. It stands among the pioneers to receive approval for its net-zero objectives from the Science Based Targets initiative, underscoring its leadership in the industry.

Global sustainability solutions

NTT LTD not only achieved EcoVadis Gold status but also offers comprehensive global sustainability solutions to the market and their clients. These include a software-based Carbon Footprint calculator and embedded visibility of carbon emissions across various unique platforms such as the Smart Management Platform (for Sustainable Cities and Buildings), Software-Defined Infrastructure (for IT OEMs and portfolio-level visibility), Managed Network Services (for AIOPS and IT asset utilization levels), and Managed Employee Experience platforms. Additionally, they provide Sustainable Global Data Centers and Colocation services, enabling clients to transfer their energy-intensive workloads from older, less efficient on-premise data centers to NTT DATA. This initiative aims to reduce clients’ operating costs and significantly lower their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, thereby reducing their overall IT greenhouse gas footprint.

Through its global technological innovations and partnerships, NTT DATA is actively addressing the world’s climate and risk challenges, integrating sustainability into various industries and sectors. They collaborate closely with clients to align with their unique decarbonization strategies, offering guidance on where to initiate and invest. This includes providing insights on sustainability-led returns on investments and calculating reductions in carbon footprints to measure the environmental impact of capital investments. Their approach includes achieving targeted carbon footprint reductions over time, using cost-to-carbon metrics.

Employee wellness and empowerment program

Additionally, NTT DATA has implemented a policy of three days of paid volunteer leave annually for its employees. This initiative supports education and conservation projects within their local communities. In FY23, this program resulted in 40,780 hours contributed by 6,127 employees.

“Our brand promise to ‘transform businesses for success, disrupt industries for good, and shape a better world for all’ informs our combined future approach to sustainability. Winning the Gold Medal signifies EcoVadis’ high recognition of our efforts in implementing various sustainable development initiatives and corporate social responsibility policies. It also represents how serious we are about the importance of embedding sustainability into the fabric of everything we do as a business. As we strive for a more sustainable future for generations to come, we will continue to innovate to try master the ecological, economic and social challenges of our time.” concludes Govender
