Companies all around the world are navigating a new reality where their employees work from home – in an attempt to limit the spread of COVID-19. Taking this into account, Google announced that it’ll be halting any Chrome and Chrome OS updates scheduled for the upcoming weeks.

Google says that balancing adjusted working hours and environments is enough stress right now and it’s for that reason “we are pausing upcoming Chrome and Chrome OS releases”.
“Our primary objectives are to ensure they (Chrome and Chrome OS) continue to be stable, secure and work reliably for anyone who depends on them. We’ll continue to prioritize any updates related to security, which will be included in Chrome 80,” reads an official statement from the company.
Google also took to Twitter to make the announcement.
Due to adjusted work schedules, we’re pausing upcoming Chrome & Chrome OS releases. Our goal is to ensure they continue to be stable, secure, & reliable for anyone who depends on them. We’ll prioritize updates related to security, which will be included in Chrome 80. Stay tuned.

“It makes sense that Google doesn’t want to risk unforeseen bugs popping up and making life more difficult for Chromebook owners and everyone doing their work in Chrome during these stressful days,” says The Verge writer, Chris Welch. “This is also an admission that it’s difficult to balance Chrome stability and new features with the team so decentralized”.
Google was scheduled to release new updates and features earlier this week. And it has not yet advised on when Chrome users can expect to see the updates. 9to5Google reports that Google is using this time to instead focus on “security and reliability rather than introducing new user-facing or developer features”.
