On Friday, 13 September 2019, DownDetector reported that Cell C networks across South Africa were experiencing downtime – while there is still no word on what caused the problem, many consumers were unable to send or receive pictures on WhatsApp while others could not load content on Twitter.
“Anyone else having an issue with sending or receiving pictures on WhatsApp? Yet messages are working fine? Can’t view statuses either,” questioned a confused Cell C consumer on the detection site.
Cell C consumers also took to social networking platform, Twitter, to voice their concerns, with one consumer tweeting, “I have limited internet connection. I’m on Twitter but pictures are not loading. On WhatsApp, I can’t download anything like voice notes and pics”.
According to MyBroadBand, the reports began at around 07:00. The huge spikes in downtime impacted most of the countries urban hubs, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth.
In response to the confusion, Cell C support tweeted, “Our engineers are working on tracking the issue. Please check within the next hour to see if there has been any change, and advise”.
“This morning [we] briefly experienced intermittent issues with WhatsApp media (photo and video) download. The problem has since been resolved.”
