On 22 July 2019 Blizzard Entertainment revealed the newest character to join Overwatch’s ever-expanding collection of heroes. Blizzard announced the new hero via a story trailer told through voice-over and still art, which was uploaded to Twitter and YouTube. The 31st hero coming to Overwatch is called Sigma, a scientist who is passionate about his job and makes it his purpose to discover the secrets of the universe.
Although this is the first glimpse of the new hero we have received, Blizzard has not yet revealed his full backstory and gameplay mechanics. The trailer, however, gives us a little insight into his character. Sigma appears to have undergone a catastrophic event that has left him with the ability to control gravity. In the trailer, Sigma is shown to be obsessed with gravity. “Gravity… gravity is a harness. My entire career has been devoted to this idea… to this moment. Decades! If the unifying theories are correct, we will soon be able to harness the power of a black hole! Nothing will ever be the same,” Sigma says at the beginning of the trailer as he is working on calculations and trying to crack his ‘harnessing gravity’ theory.
Things, however, soon turn sour. The experiment seems to have failed, as Sigma claims that the field failed. He is then seen being wheeled on a gurney through the halls of a hospital. The trailer then delves into what can be viewed as Sigma’s mental state. The trailer did not specify if he will be on the side of good or evil. The official Overwatch Twitter account, however, posted an interesting caption with the trailer that said “Introducing Sigma-an eccentric astrophysicist who hopes to unlock the secrets of the universe, unaware that he is being used as a living weapon.”
There is no official release date for the hero, but fans can expect to learn more details about his abilities and backstory soon.
