President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the Department of Communications and the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services will be merging into what will henceforth only be known as the Department of Communications during a Cabinet reshuffle on Thursday afternoon, 22 November. However, this merger will only be finalised after the 2019 election and the departments will remain separate entities in the meantime.
This newly merged department will be run by Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, the previous Deputy Minister of Telecommunications, now serving as the Minister of Communications.
Siyabonga Cwele, former Minister of Telecommunications, will be taking over as the new Minister of Home Affairs while Nomvula Mokonyane will be leaving the now-former Department of Communications to take over as Environmental Affairs minister.
Ramaphosa said this is the first in a wave of moves to help with the “realigning process in order to put into the effect the transformation we are affecting with regards to economic management”.
