According to a report by the BBC, YouTube has announced the launch of a $35-a-month TV subscription service that will see them rival US cable networks.

The new live TV service will have more than 40 channels, which will include some of the country’s biggest networks such as ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and ESPN according to Wired.

In addition to the live TV, the subscription will give US users a “cloud DVR” that will let users record and store programming, AI-powered search and personalisation, and access to YouTube Red programming.

Although the YouTube generated content will be an attraction, the main draw card and which is most likely to make cable companies nervous, is the inclusion of top channels – specifically those showing live sport, which will see the battle for advertising revenue become even tougher in an already saturated market.

YouTube has said that the platform is set to be released in the “coming weeks and months,” and although it does not feature major channels such as HBO, CNN and AMC, it is expected to gain support from the “YouTube Generation.”

There were no plans for a similar service outside the US.
