The Nigeria Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE) has revealed confirmation for the appointment of a guided liquidator for the privatisation of Nigeria Telecommunications (Nitel) as well as its mobile counter-part, MTel.

BPE, Director General, Benjamin Dikki revealed that the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) had approved the appointment of a liquidator, pending court confirmation. Dikki stated that the privatisation process was on course and will be followed through by the agency.

Dikki also mentioned that: “The process is continuing and prospective bidders are currently conducting Data Room due diligence on the assets.” According to Dikki, a pre-bidders conference was held, which was used to brief potential bidders on the facts as well as provide bidders with relevant and nessesary documentation.

According to reports, there have been about three futile attempts to sell the public operators; however, Dikki had said though the operator has lost its relevance in the scheme of things with the liberalisation of the telecoms sector, the government still has a duty to the people to avoid the operator being sold as scrap.
