Telecom Namibia has revealed that it will commence the repair of the West Africa Cable System (WACS), which is off Namibia’s coast, on 16 August 2014.

Back in May 2014, Telecom Namibia detected a cable fault on the cable system. Traffic was restored utilising a temporary solution; however, the company has localised the fault and will commence repair. According to the company, the repair work is expected to be completed by 23 August 2014. Although, this may depend on various factors. These include: weather as well as the condition of the repair vessel.

The cable system transports a mass amount of internet traffic to and from Namibia, Zambia as well as Botswana. During the repair work, Telecom Namibia will reroute internet traffic through other undersea cable systems to mitigate the impacts on customers. According to the company, the repair work is of national importance.
