Twenty-six senior officers from the Gambia Police Force (GPF) completed their training on leadership and Information Communication Technology (ICT) at the Management Development Institute (MDI) on Friday in Kanifing. The training course was organised by the GPF and sponsored by the Personel Management Office (PMO).
Yankuba Sonko, Inspector General of Police (IGP), noted the importance of this first of its kind training session. Sonko believes it falls in line with President Yahya Jammeh’s vision of transforming the security sector.
Sonko further noted that a five-year strategic development plan drawn up in 2010, reflected their long-term goals.
He said, “this initiative is aimed at improving policing standards in order to achieve much needed reforms that will help to modernise the force, coupled with improved capacity building of members at all levels. The lack of personnel with the required skills and knowledge is the key inhibiting factor affecting service delivery and needs immediate attention if we are to achieve our goals and objectives”.
According to Dr. Jainaba Kah, MDI director general, their institution was the top training school in public sector management and administration, and has been a major player in President Jammeh’s public sector reform agenda.
She said: “The execution of our mandate to build human capacity and enhance professional development for not only the public, but the private and NGO sectors has been going on for over 28 years now and many public servants have benefited from various training programs at MDI.”
