DJ Hero studio starts new venture

Rhythm-based game DJ Hero made a lot of tracks when it was released as a club competitor to the hugely popular Guitar Hero franchise, but since it has been dying a slow death, the genre pretty much fell flat.

Now the developers of DJ Hero, FreeStyle Games, have opened up a new studio – Music In Colour – and plan to release their first music game on iOS very soon.

“The music business needs to capture a new audience. Rather than make a game then license the music, this is much more of a partnership. We think there is a great opportunity to leverage the mobile platform to build something that reaches a wider audience, and monetizes music,” former FreeStyle commercial director Chris Lee told newspaper The Guardian.

Their newest game, titled Say What?!, is a “collaboration between the studio, music production company Reactify, and major independent recording studio Metropolis Group. It is a music game based on tapping iconography that represents a track’s lyrics, which utilises a licensing deal with Sony Music Entertainment,” Gamasutra wrote.
