According to various news reports, Facebook is planning a new HTML5-based app distribution platform which will open mobile games in a browser rather than directly through mobile operating systems.

TechCrunch is reporting that that project has been named Project Spartan, and “will load mobile web apps wrapped in basic Facebook functionality, and provide developers easy access to Facebook’s credits payment platform.”

The new platform would provide a different route for distributing mobile games, if developers don’t want to go through the respective App market stores.

“About 80 outside developers, including social game mega-publisher Zynga, are already working on the new platform, in advance of a public unveiling planned for some time within the next few weeks,” TechCrunch wrote.
