Telecommunications experts in Nigeria have called for the formation of a Nigerian Mobile Commerce Strategy (NMCS) in order to address many of the current pitfalls they see afflicting the telecom industry in the country.
At the Innovators Breakfast series organized by Financial Technology magazine in Lagos, some 120 management and electronic payment experts and business leaders met to discuss the ongoing development of the sector in the country.
The theme of the meeting was “Harmonizing SIM registration requirement with M-Payment KYC for secure mobile commerce in Nigeria.”
The experts said that mobile payment and other financial transactions continue to remain vulnerable to criminal activities and should be buttressed by government initiatives to crackdown on these practices.
They argued that the SIM registration process currently being undertaken by the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), “offers an opportunity to address these challenges head on,” said one speaker.
One analyst, who attended the meeting, said afterwards that the discussion was “positive” and that he expects the government to heed the warnings.
“We have to do something to combat the ongoing frustrations that local companies are having and that are keeping international business at bay. There must be a dialogue and an understanding of the issues at hand, and this meeting helped get that started,” he said.
