EASSy to arrive in Kenya today?

THE East African Submarine System (EASSy) is expected anytime today (Tuesday) to arrive in the sea-port of Mombasa, Kenya in a
move strongly believed to result in a reduction in telecoms tariffs.

The tests to enable the undersea fibre optic cables to go live will be conducted in June this year.

The West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC) has been tasked with laying the EASSy cable, which will then join other undersea fibre optic cables in Djibouti, Mozambique, South Africa and Sudan respectively.

This positive development comes barely four weeks after the under-sea cables had arrived at Mthunzini, Durban, South Africa.

EASSy’s arrival in Kenya is the third undersea fibre optic cable to date in the whole of Africa following other arrivals recently.

The 10,000km EASSy cables are expected to make a final landing in Tanzania’s commercial capital of Dar es Salaam in April.
