Symantec’s latest State of Spam and Phishing report, published online in January, shows an astonishing 92% of adult phishing scams taking place on social networking sites and high volumes of spam and phishing around Haiti’s tragic events.
The report states a high volume in Haiti related spam and phishing last month, as spammers used the interest around the tragic event for their benefit. Also, Symantec warned that seasonal spam is on the rise, particularly thriving around festive seasons like Christmas and Valentine’s.
In January 2010, spam and phishing doubled in percentage, compared to December last year. The most common scams were requests of hosting large sums of money while moving country with substantial returns, known as 419-Nigerian spam, which accounted for 21% of all spam analyzed in the report.
