THE Nigerian government has threatened to reign in members of the previous Nitel/Mitel board if it is proven that they abused their positions and stole funds.
Vice President Goodluck Jonathan told media this week as he announced a new board to run the telecommunications firm.
“If anybody has stolen anything, it must be brought to our notice and they will be made to pay for it,” he told Nigerian media
“Over a long period of time, a lot of things have gone wrong in NITEL and Mtel. The new board must make sure that NITEL and Mtel management is intact and check if things are above board,” Goodluck added.
Meanwhile, the new board, chaired by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communications, Amuna Lawan Ali, has 60 days to prepare the company for privatization.
