South African trade unions are mourning the death of Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, hailing her role in the development of the sector and the empowerment of women.
“The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has learned with great sadness the passing of Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri. We send our condolences to her family and comrades,” the trade union said.
She was appointed as the first female premier of the Free State from 1997 to 1999, after which she was elected to Parliament. She was later appointed as Minister of Communications, a position she held until her death.
Matsepe-Casaburri died on Monday in a Pretoria hospital. She had not been well for some time.
