ICASA allocates slots for election broadcasts

In anticipation of South Africa’s national and provincial elections on 22 April this year, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) which regulates the country’s telecommunications sector, will today allocate broadcast slots for party election broadcasts.

In a statement, ICASA said: “The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has received a draft list of political party candidates for the 2009 national and provincial elections from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).”

“In terms of the Regulations on Party Election Broadcast, political advertisements, the equitable treatment of political parties by broadcasting licensees and related matters 2009 and as per the provisions of section 57 of the Electronic Communications Act of 2005, the Authority will allocate time slots for each political organization,”

All political parties contesting the elections have been invited to attend the meeting, where the allocation of broadcast slots will take place.
