According to Which News, laptop sales grew by 40 percent in the last quarter of 2008 worldwide compared to sales in 2007. They said that laptops enjoyed immense growth compared to pc’s, which suffered a 1.3 percent drop in sales during the same period.

Pretoria News reported that during the week before Christmas no PC’s were featured on online shopping portal, Amazon.com’s top ten selling PC and hardware list compared to the seven laptop models that made the list.

The need to access the internet on the go, completing work tasks at any given time played a huge role in sky rocketing laptop sales across the world. The report stated that iSuppli analyst, Peter Lin, said on both price and performance, laptops became very competitive and it surprises him that laptop’s were not able to catch up with desktops even earlier.

It is believed that laptop sales will increase immensely in 2009 and it is forecasted that they will take up 55 percent of all computer shipments according to data tracking firm IDC. The report indicated that even though laptops sales are rising, many believe that desktops, which were introduced in the 1970’s, will still enjoy a long life among customers.-Natalie Grobler
