Safaricom, Zain and Econet have joined a global consortium of GSM operators in a search for more renewable power sources as rising electricity and fuel prices push the mobile firms’ spending on energy to new highs.
According to Business Daily they have joined the Green Power for Mobile programme whose goal it is to push the mobile industry to use renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, or sustainable biofuels, to power 118,000 new and existing base stations in developing countries by 2012.
The move would save global telephony firms up to 2.5 billion litres of diesel per annum and reduce annual carbon emissions by up to 6.3 million tonnes.
