Econet to launch 3G in Kenya

econet_ceo.jpgEconet Wireless Kenya has announced that it will later this year be offering 3G services to its customers.
Econet the third mobile services provider in Kenya, has upped the competitive stakes to follow the current market leader Safaricom.

Business Daily reported today that the company is keen to capture a niche market of youths and hopes to leverage its data offering to gain market share upon its launch in November.

“We intend to have a well managed and reasonably priced package for our customers. The technology is designed to enable mobile operators to offer its users a wide range of more advanced services including high speed data, while achieving greater network capacity though improved spectral efficiency,” said the firm’s Managing Director Michael Foley.

Since its arrival in Kenya, Econet wireless, has been introducing new innovation which have become popular with the locals.

Last week Econet Wireless Kenya announced its partnership with Obopay, a mobile payment service provide based in the US to allow its subscribers transfer money across the network.
The mobile industry is counting on the arrival of 3G services to drive more growth in subscribers’ numbers as well as boost sales of data enabled handsets such as camera phones that enable users to send large amounts of data.
