Chinese company wins $58m Libyan telecoms contract

Chinese telecoms equipment supplier ZTE Corp has won a $58m network expansion contract from Libyan mobile network operator Libyana, The Tripoli Post reports.

The newspaper said the deal will enable Libyana to expand its existing network from 1 million lines to 6.5 million lines.

Libyana is one of two mobile phone operators owned by the General Post and Telecommunication Company, GPTC.

Since 2005, ZTE has won similar contracts in Nigeria, Algeria, Lesotho, Ghana, Venezuela, Malaysia, and India.

Earlier this year, it signed a deal with Libya Telecom & Technology to build a WiMAX network covering eight major cities in Libya, including Tripoli.
