As the menace of cybercrime continues to ravage the economy, an anti cyber crime campaign organisation, Global Network for Cyber solution, is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Justice and the National Information Technology Development Agency NITDA to ensure digital national security. The organisations are set to hold the first national conference on cybercrime and cyber security in Nigeria. The event is geared towards sensitising Nigerians to the menace of cyber crime.
The event is premised on the need to provide a cross platform cyber security solution framework that can be proactively incorporated into existing National Government economic development programmes of action as encapsulated in vision 2020.
The conference also seeks to analyse the cause, the adverse impact on socio-economic development and performance with special focus on the financial sector of the economy as a nation’s case study as well as bring to the knowledge of National government and principal sector drivers, the components of emerging and existing institutional and enterprise digital crime.
The event, with the theme “National Digital Security: Engaging the challenges of Digital Criminality, and Future of Nigeria” is scheduled to take place at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja between August 17 and 20 this year.
The issue of cyber crime and cyber security has been on the front burner for sometime now and the International Communications Union recently identified Nigeria as the weakest link in the fight against cyber crime. Global cybercrime statistics reveal a serious challenge faced by economies of the world. Between 2005-2007 global financial houses lost over $5 billion to cybercrime. Various reports conducted by reputable bodies on the issue have shown that hackers’ activities all over the world have caused the global economy over $1 billion over the past 12 months and Nigeria has not escaped the scourge.
The Global Network for cyber crime according to the statement states: “Unfortunately, financial sector is the hottest and biggest target of cybercrime in recent time. Billions of money in dollars has been invested, with million of career generated via this sector.”
