Mitec to rollout wireless infrastructure in Africa

Mitec Telecom Inc. announced a new contract to provide its Very Small Aperture Satellite Terminal product, also known as a VSAT Block up Converter for a major cellular network operator in Africa. Financial terms were not disclosed

The initial order is expected to be the first in a series of orders in support of a cellular network build-out in some regions of Africa. Deliveries have commenced from product inventory and will continue over the next two quarters following new production for the remainder of required volumes.

“Mitec continues to deliver on our strategy to introduce more of our existing off-the-shelf products to new markets,” said Dan Piergentili, Mitec’s President and CEO.

“Our VSAT products are preferred backhaul solutions for cellular networks which provide the connection between remote cellular networks and wired telephone systems. This is especially needed in countries where telephony infrastructure is required despite large distances between remote locations and mountainous terrain where traditional microwave radio backhaul solutions are less favorable,” he said.

The application of VSAT technology can greatly extend the reach of existing telephony infrastructures in regions that need to quickly and economically expand cellular network coverage. By using 2-way satellite communications in mesh networks, the VSAT Block up Converter seamlessly links cellular networks and “wire-line” telephony to existing technology.

Previously, traditional microwave backhaul solutions typically use many repeaters at distances of 20-60KM with utility towers and repeaters must be closer together if the terrain is mountainous. Satellite network-based backhaul solutions do not need towers and can link telephony networks over substantially greater distances without the need for repeaters.

“Contracts such as this are proof that Mitec’s customers value our ability to engineer solutions for varied and technically-challenging network applications,” said Piergentili.
