South African mobile service provider Cell C is launching two new promotional data packages that offer customers Internet access at less than R9 for a full Gigabyte of data.

The prepaid offering, Giga 200, will give customers a 50GB peak data bundle that can be used from 6am to midnight and a 150GB midnight data bundle that can be used from midnight to 6am. The Giga 200 prepaid SIM only package will cost R1799 once-off with a total of 200GB of inclusive data valid for 365 days. That works out to less than R9 per GB.
“Our customers have been asking for a prepaid option that will allow them to download large files and perform system and application updates during the night. We are pleased to be able to bring them a product that will give them more flexibility with their data,” says Cell C CEO Alan Knott-Craig.
Alongside the prepaid product, Cell C is introducing Giga 20, a 12-month contract promotion that will provide customers with a total of 20GB of data to use each month. Giga 20 includes a 5GB peak data bundle that can be used from 6am to midnight and a 15GB midnight data bundle that can be used from midnight to 6am.
The Giga 20 contract package will cost R189 per month and will be available at all service providers and Cell C franchise stores. The inclusive monthly data will be loaded on the first of every month and will be valid for that month. The first month’s subscription and inclusive data will be pro-rated, and thereafter the full rate will apply.
When using either of the new Giga packages, the data usage will automatically switch between using the peak data bundle and the midnight data bundle at midnight each day. If customers run out of either of the bundles, they will be charged an out-of-bundle rate of 15c/MB. Subscribers who select the Top-Up option will be charged for out of bundle usage only if they have recharged with airtime. This option is convenient for customers who wish to control their data spend and don’t want any surprises at the end of the month.
The Giga promotions are only valid on the Cell C network and roaming does not apply. The promotional packages will only be available for a limited time from 8 November 2012 until 31 January 2013.

Alan is definitely on the right track, the only problem here is the means of delivery! It's not that fast if you come to think of how much bandwidth the actual tower can deliver and then do some simple math on how many customers can get the full speed off a tower. We also live with the problem that most of the towers are not connected by fibre so you end up with back haul contention as well making matters even worse. Badly designed networks can not deliver high speed content!
