Egyptian family names daughter “Facebook”

Must Read

An Egyptian man has named his newborn daughter ‘Facebook’ in honor of the role the social networking site played in catalyzing the Egyptian uprising which led former president Hosni Mubarak to resign after 30 years in power.

Gamal Ibrahim, a twenty-something man from Alexandria, gave his daughter the name “to express his joy at the achievements made by the January 25 youth,” he told al-Ahram, the leading government-run newspaper in Egypt.

Facebook’s unusual name has drawn international interest, with many expressing sympathy for the child. Yet, “the child Facebook Jamal Ibrahim will grow up in freedom – including the freedom, we hope, to abbreviate “Facebook” to the initials FB should that seem preferable to her, or lose it altogether,” wrote Roz Kaveney in the Guardian.
