BYD Shark 6 and Dolphin Surf named finalists for 2026 South African Car of the Year

BYD South Africa has confirmed that two of its models, the BYD Shark 6 and the BYD Dolphin Surf, have been selected as finalists for the 2026 South African Car of the Year (COTY) awards.

The announcement places both vehicles in the final round of judging, where they will be assessed by an expert panel of COTY jurors. The evaluation will focus on criteria such as on-road performance, technology, design, energy efficiency and overall driving experience.

According to BYD South Africa Managing Director Steve Chang, the nominations highlight the brand’s rapid growth in the local market. “Having entered the South African market in mid-2023, BYD has already secured not one but two vehicles as finalists, demonstrating our brand’s strong appeal and understanding of what the local market needs,” he said.

The Shark 6 is BYD’s new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) double-cab bakkie, aimed at buyers seeking performance and utility with improved efficiency. The model combines a hybrid powertrain with off-road capability and practical features designed for both work and leisure.

The Dolphin Surf, positioned as South Africa’s most affordable fully electric vehicle, targets urban drivers with a compact design, competitive range and a focus on affordability. The model is intended to make electric mobility more accessible to everyday consumers.

Both vehicles are equipped with BYD’s Blade Battery technology, as well as advanced driver assistance systems and modern infotainment interfaces.

BYD said the nominations follow strong demand and positive feedback from consumers since the models were launched locally. The company also noted its ongoing partnerships with organisations such as Eskom and Absa to support the development of charging infrastructure and wider adoption of new energy vehicles.

Commercial Director Mark Handley said the recognition reinforces the company’s long-term strategy in the country. “The Shark 6 and Dolphin Surf represent our dedication to providing South Africans with reliable, efficient, and forward-thinking options that meet the demands of our diverse roads and lifestyles,” he said.

The winners of the 2026 South African Car of the Year awards will be announced after the final evaluation process later in the year.
