The introduction of new technologies in the mining sector has greatly improved efficiency in how operations run their production processes. Advancements in Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality applications have played a huge role in many companies as well.

Immersive Technologies has announced the winners of its 16th annual Global Business Improvement Award, which acknowledges the most outstanding results achieved by mining companies that use simulation as a key driver in mining operation and workforce development optimization.

The Global Business Improvement Award is the highest recognition in the industry for mining companies. Category winners are selected from customers across 54 countries for their achievements in continuously improving mining workforce safety, productivity, and machine reliability through strategic workforce development-based initiatives.

Kumba Iron Ore earned global industry recognition through its Operate for Reliability (O4R) program. This initiative, involving multidisciplinary mining teams like Load & Haul, Drilling & Blasting, and Road Maintenance & Construction, led Kumba to win the Reliability Award for enhancing operator behavior and reducing equipment downtime.

Under the guidance and training from the Immersive Technologies team at Sishen Mine through their PRO5 simulator platform.

“The implementation of simulator-based training as part of the Operate for Reliability (O4R) program has delivered measurable improvements across key operational metrics at Sishen mine. By focusing on the practical application of training, operators have shown significant reductions in operational errors, enhanced adherence to safety protocols, and better machine handling practices. These improvements will have a direct impact on the business in the form of reduced component wear, fewer maintenance interventions, and increased productivity.” Stephan Voges – Project Manager

The goal of the project was to train best practice operating techniques to efficiently and safely reduce machine wear and tear on their fleet of Komatsu haul trucks and P&H 4100 rope shovels.
