LINX Expands in Kenya with Launch of New Interconnection Hub

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) proudly announces the launch of its new interconnection hub, LINX Mombasa.

Located within the iColo MBA1 and MBA2 data centers, LINX Mombasa is a multi-site, interconnected Internet Exchange Point (IXP). These data centers are strategically positioned in Kenya’s key digital gateway, Mombasa.

LINX Mombasa provides a resilient and future-proof fabric that serves as a central meeting point for networks to exchange online traffic, keeping it closer to the end user. This method, known as peering, reduces network latency and enhances overall performance and control.

Mombasa is experiencing significant growth in the interconnection market and is one of the most internationally connected locations in Africa. With 7 submarine cables connecting Kenya to the entire African coastline, as well as the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, Mombasa is a vital hub for digital connectivity.

 LINX’s Expanding Footprint in Kenya

The launch of LINX Mombasa comes just over 12 months after the successful inauguration of LINX Nairobi, LINX’s first IXP on the African continent. LINX’s global expansion strategy focuses on delivering value to its existing member networks while positively impacting the local connectivity ecosystem for the betterment of the Internet.

Nurani Nimpuno, Head of Global Engagement at LINX, expressed excitement about the continued collaboration with iColo, stating, “We are thrilled to be extending our synergies with iColo, with whom we have had a successful journey at LINX Nairobi. We were seeing a demand for LINX services in Mombasa when we came to Kenya, and I am very pleased we can now start delivering the same value here.”

LINX Mombasa offers content delivery networks and local ISPs an alternative platform for interconnection, complete with additional services available across resilient and redundant infrastructure. This provides a valuable opportunity for networks to enhance their performance and connectivity.

Ranjith Cherickel, Founder & Chief Executive Officer of iColo, remarked, “We are delighted to host LINX Mombasa at our highly connected data center facilities, MBA1 and MBA2. This collaboration underscores our commitment to providing best-in-class infrastructure and services that drive digital transformation in Africa. The new IXP will create significant opportunities for partnerships, innovation, and growth in the region.”
