Today we celebrate World Aids day, a day dedicated to the awareness of Aids across the world since 1988.

According to the WHO more than 14 million people worldwide, about 40%, of people living with the HIV virus that causes AIDS, are unawere of their status. With the #WORLDAIDSDAY trending worldwide, we take a look at what people had to say on Twitter.

In commemorating World Aids day, South Africa held an event at the Sinaba Stadium in Deyveton, with the Minister of Health, the deputy president and many other dignitaries in attendance.

South Africa also  launched clinical trials of an experimental vaccine against the virus. The new study, known as HVTN 702, will involve more than 5,400 sexually active men and women aged 18-35 in 15 areas around South Africa over four years. It is one of the biggest clinical trials involving the disease ever undertaken and has revived hopes of a breakthrough in the battle against AIDS.

Zimbabwe commemorated World Aids day under the theme, Closing the Tap of New HIV Infections. At the Mbizo Stadium in Kwekwe hundrads gathered to witness Stakeholders and implementing partners showcase the programmes and services they are offering in the national response to HIV and Aids on the sidelines of the commemorations.

Under the theme 90-90-90, Ghana celebrated World Aids day by launching The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC). The commission is aimed at ensuring that efforts are strengthened in the treatment of all persons who are infected with HIV, as well as addressing the needs of all others to prevent new infections.

Speaking at the launch was Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, he said that by 2020  90 per cent of the population should know their HIV status, 90 per cent of those who test positive must be put on the treatment regime, while a 90 per cent viral load suppression must be achieved for those on treatment.

Zambia is part the counrties that WHO supports along side Malawi, Zimbabwe and. The project is aimed at making free home testing kits widely available, and said a number of other countries were interested in joining the initiative. This is what Tweeps (Twitter users) in the country had to say.
