Developers have spoken of the possibility of a second season for some time, but no release date was officially given – until now.

Season 2 popped up on the digital download system Steam and lists the release date as 17 December.

“Many months have passed since the events seen in Season One of The Walking Dead, and Clementine is searching for safety. But what can an ordinary child do to stay alive when the living can be just as bad – and sometimes worse – than the dead?” the game’s description reads on the site.

While very few details have emerged on Season 2, Telltale confirmed that players will be assuming the role of little Clementine for most of the games.

“As Clementine, you will be tested by situations and dilemmas that will test your morals and your instinct for survival. Your decisions and actions will change the story around you, in this sequel to 2012’s Game of the Year.”

Gamers can currently pre-purchase the whole season via Steam at a 10 per cent discount – £17.09 instead of £18.99, while the game will also be released on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Vita, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as an iOS version later.

Based on Robert Kirkman’s award-winning comic books, decisions players made in Season One and in 400 Days will affect the story in Season Two
