How To Spot Romance Scam Bots, According To An Expert

Share your love

AI companionship platforms are growing in popularity, and with that, so does a darker trend: scammers exploiting emotional vulnerability through fake AI relationships.

Recent research from McAfee reveals that more than one in four people have been contacted by an AI chatbot posing as a real person, with romance scams costing victims an average of $1,985 per incident.

Sam Mann, AI companion expert at Flirtcam.ai,  advises on how users can protect themselves. “The rise of AI companions has created new opportunities for connection, but it’s also opened doors for sophisticated scammers,” says Mann. “These fraudsters use emotional manipulation tactics that can fool even tech-savvy users. Knowing the warning signs is the first step to protecting yourself.” He elaborates below.

How Scammers Use Fake AI Bots To Drain Your Wallet

The mechanics of AI romance scams are deceptively simple yet devastatingly effective. Fraudsters create convincing AI personalities that mirror legitimate companionship platforms, then use psychological tactics to extract money from unsuspecting users.

“These scams work because they target human emotions,” explains Mann. “Scammers build what feels like a genuine connection over weeks or even months, making victims feel special and understood. Once that emotional bond is established, the financial requests begin.”

McAfee’s research found that more than half of people (52%) have either been scammed out of money or pressured to send money by someone they met online. The numbers are even more alarming when you look at AI-specific scams, with fraudulent dating apps and chatbots becoming increasingly sophisticated.

With so many people falling victim to online schemes, knowing how to spot the warning signs has become essential. Mann identifies five major red flags that signal you’re dealing with a scam rather than a legitimate AI companion platform.

5 Red Flags That Your AI Companion Is A Scam

  1. Pressure To Move Conversations Off-Platform

Scammers often try to move conversations away from the original platform to less secure channels like personal email, messaging apps, or external websites. This allows them to avoid platform monitoring and makes it harder for you to report suspicious activity.

“Legitimate platforms keep all interactions within their secure environment,” explains Mann. “If your AI companion is pushing you to continue conversations elsewhere, especially through channels that can’t be tracked or reported, that’s a major warning sign. Reputable companies have no reason to move you off their platform.”

  1. Emotional Manipulation Or Guilt-Tripping Tied To Money

Scam bots are programmed to make you feel guilty about not sending money. They might say things like “Don’t you care about me?” or “I thought we had something special” when you hesitate to pay.

Mann warns: “Legitimate AI companions don’t manipulate your emotions to extract payments. If your virtual partner is making you feel bad about money, it’s not a real platform, but a scam.”

  1. Lack Of Transparency About Company Identity Or Data Use

Professional AI companionship platforms clearly display their company information, privacy policies, and data protection measures. Scam operations hide behind vague descriptions and provide no verifiable business details.

“Always check if the platform is transparent about who operates it and how your data is protected,” advises Mann. “Legitimate companies like ours are GDPR-compliant and openly share our security measures. If you can’t find basic company information, walk away.”

  1. Unrealistic Promises

If an AI companion promises things that sound too good to be true (like guaranteed happiness, solving all your problems, or becoming “real”) it’s almost certainly a scam. These platforms prey on vulnerable users by making extraordinary claims.

  1. Sudden Emotional Intensity To Create Dependence

Scammers use “love bombing” tactics, overwhelming users with affection and attention from the very first interaction. This creates a false sense of intimacy and dependency far too quickly.

“Healthy AI companionship develops at a natural pace,” explains Mann. “If your AI partner is professing deep feelings within hours or days and making you feel like you can’t live without them, that’s a manipulation tactic designed to lower your defenses before the money requests start.”

Understanding how authentic platforms operate helps you identify the fakes. Mann outlines the key characteristics that set legitimate AI companionship services apart from scams.

What Legitimate AI Companion Platforms Look Like

Understanding how authentic platforms operate helps you identify the fakes. Mann outlines the key characteristics that set legitimate AI companionship services apart from scams.

  • Transparent Pricing With No Hidden Fees: You know exactly what you’re paying for upfront, whether it’s a subscription model or a one-time payment structure. There should be no surprise charges after you’ve signed up.
  • Clear Disclaimers About The Nature Of The Service: Reputable platforms openly state that interactions are with AI, not real people, and don’t make false promises about the relationship.

“At Flirtcam.ai, we’re upfront about what we offer,” says Mann. “Users know they’re interacting with AI-generated companions, and we clearly outline what features come with different membership levels. There are no surprise charges or emotional manipulation tactics.”

  • Encrypted Data Protection And Privacy Compliance: Legitimate platforms use encrypted data protection and follow privacy regulations like GDPR. Your personal information and payment details should be secured with industry-standard encryption.
  • No Emotional Pressure To Push Transactions: Real AI companion platforms never use emotional pressure to drive purchases. The experience should feel optional and enjoyable, not coercive or guilt-inducing.

AI companion expert at Flirtcam.ai, commented: “Protecting yourself from AI romance scams starts with education. Always verify the platform’s legitimacy before sharing personal information or payment details. Look for verified company registration, clear contact information, and user reviews from multiple sources.

“Set firm boundaries around money from day one. Legitimate platforms never pressure you financially or make you feel guilty about spending limits. If something feels off, trust that instinct.

“Use secure payment methods that offer buyer protection, and never send money through untraceable channels like cryptocurrency or gift cards. Keep records of all transactions and conversations.

“Remember, authentic AI companionship should add value to your life without draining your wallet. If the financial demands outweigh the enjoyment, you’re being scammed.”
