10 Tech Skills on South Africa’s Critical Skills List

South Africa continues to face shortages in key technology roles, creating opportunities for qualified foreign professionals to apply for a Critical Skills Work Visa.

According to Home Affairs’ visa requirements, applicants must select one occupation from the latest Critical Skills List and provide proof that they fall within that category.

A Critical Skills Work Visa can also form part of a longer-term immigration pathway, as South Africa allows certain foreign nationals to apply for permanent residence if they have a permanent work offer or exceptional skills and qualifications.

Here are 10 technology-related occupations listed by Home Affairs:

1. ICT Systems Analyst
   Professionals who evaluate ICT systems and recommend improvements or new systems.
2. Data Scientist
   Experts who collect, analyse and transform large volumes of data using tools such as SAS, R and Python.
3. Software Developer
   Professionals who design, develop, test and maintain software applications and systems.
4. Programmer Analyst
   Specialists who design, test, implement and support software applications and systems.
5. Developer Programmer
   Professionals who interpret technical designs, write code and maintain software applications.
6. Multimedia Specialist
   Specialists who create digital content, multimedia systems, animation, video, graphics and interactive platforms.
7. Applications Programmer
   Programmers who write and maintain software applications and operating systems.
8. Computer Quality Assurance Analyst
   Professionals who test software and operating systems to ensure performance and reliability.
9. Computer Network and Systems Engineer
   Experts who plan, deploy, test and manage computer networks, systems and infrastructure.
10. ICT Security Specialist
    Cybersecurity professionals who manage security policies, procedures and recovery strategies to protect ICT systems.

These occupations appear in the Home Affairs Critical Skills List under ICT and related technology roles. Most require at least a Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma at NQF Level 7, along with relevant professional body registration where applicable.

While being on the list does not automatically guarantee a visa, it gives qualified foreign professionals a recognised route to apply for work authorisation in South Africa, provided they meet the Department of Home Affairs’ requirements.
