UNITEL, in collaboration with Ericsson, has launched an advanced network modernization initiative to enhance connectivity in Angola.
The upgrade promises to deliver Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access services, which are crucial for economic growth and supporting high-speed, low-latency applications.
Ericsson has successfully transformed UNITEL S.A.’s core network using its dual-mode 5G Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Cloud Native Infrastructure solutions. This forward-thinking architecture seamlessly integrates both 4G and 5G technologies on a single platform. The upgrade enables UNITEL to provide customized services through network slicing, exposure, and edge capabilities, as well as enhanced voice and data services over a 5G standalone (5G SA) network.
Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and 5G Core are combined in Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core, which is based on cloud-native, microservice-based technology. Legacy 2G and 3G voice services can more easily switch to 4G and 5G networks because of this combination. Furthermore, UNITEL can provide real-time communication services to businesses and consumers across any access network thanks to Ericsson’s IMS.
Ericsson and UNITEL have successfully conducted a successful trial data call on a live 5G Standalone network, showcasing the full potential of 5G technology. This achievement is a pivotal moment in UNITEL’s journey to deliver next-generation 5G services, including network slicing and other technological innovations.
Júlio Gonçalves, Director of Core and Services at UNITEL, expressed his excitement about the collaboration: “Our partnership with Ericsson marks a transformative moment for Angola’s telecommunications sector. It enables us to provide our customers with a world-class network that will drive socio-economic growth and advancement across the country. With Ericsson’s cutting-edge solutions, we are confident in delivering an exceptional customer experience.”
The strategic upgrade of UNITEL’s network will facilitate various services, such as Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi Calling, 5G Voice, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), and high-speed, low-latency applications. This technological advancement is set to improve connectivity and propel economic progress in Angola.
Majda Lahlou Kassi, Vice President and Head of Ericsson West & Southern Africa, “We are dedicated to enabling a fully connected Angola through 5G technology, driving innovation, and accelerating the digital economy. Our advanced solutions will help UNITEL meet the growing demand for smart devices and data usage, bringing innovative technologies that open up new opportunities for businesses and individuals alike.”
With over 20 years of collaboration, UNITEL and Ericsson have worked together on Core Network, Radio Access Network, and Billing solutions. This latest modernization effort aims to maximize the benefits of automation while enhancing the overall 5G customer experience, offering reliable, secure, and high-quality communication solutions.
